Douglas N. Cutter, M.D.

Dr. Cutter, has made it his career to be involved in sports medicine in the Richmond area. Starting in 1987 as the team physician for Manchester High School, while in family practice residency at Chesterfield Family Practice, he became the founding medical director of the CJW Sports Medicine in July, 1988.

From that point, Dr. Cutter has made it his mission to expand and develop the sports medicine program at CJW and to assist area athletic programs with their sports medicine needs. Due to his efforts, sports medicine in the Richmond area has grown. Currently, this program is involved with numerous school programs and community-based athletic programs. Dr. Cutter is also an accomplished writer and speaks to various area and regional groups. He is a regular contributor to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Katherine L. Dec, M.D.

Dr. Katherine Dec worked at CJW Sports Medicine from 1994-96, and rejoined the team in May 2005. Dr. Dec received her medical degree from Michigan State University and received bachelor's degrees in English and chemistry from Albion College. She completed a fellowship in sports medicine and electromyography at Michigan State and did a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at MCV/VCU.

She also completed training in traditional Chinese medicine at Beijing Medical University Dr. Dec - who competed as a collegiate athlete in basketball, volleyball, and track and field - is particularly interested in women's sports issues, as well as musculoskeletal problems and electromyography. She has additional training in manual medicine, mind-body medicine, nutritional management and biomechanics.

Dr. Dec is one of the several contributing authors for the an upcoming publication from the ACSM:

ACSM Primary Care Sports Medicine, 2nd Edition “Written and edited by internationally known experts in primary care sports medicine, this book is the most comprehensive sports medicine reference geared to primary care practitioners. It is the ideal text for physicians studying for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine that is now offered in many disciplines including family practice, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and osteopathic medicine. This revised and updated Second Edition is published in association with the American College of Sports Medicine, and includes more practical information. The new, more user-friendly format features numerous illustrations, charts, and tables, including full-color illustrations."

Dr. Dec’s contribution to this book focused on treating physically challenged athletes and clinical sports medicine of the foot ankle complex.

 

 

Larry L. Benson, M.D.

Dr. Larry L. Benson joins the CJW Sports Medicine team as the practice celebrates Its 20th anniversary of providing Primary Care Sports Medicine coverage to Central Virginia athletes of all ages. Dr. Benson received his medical degree from Wayne State University, in his hometown of Detroit, MI. In 1996 he obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Physiology from Michigan State University. Dr. Benson completed a medical residency in Family Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital System and returned to Michigan State University to complete his Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2005.

Dr. Benson was a highly recruited Michigan High School All State Basketball player, but declined several scholarship offers in order to pursue a career in medicine. Complimenting the mission of the CJW Sports Medicine team to provide the personal touch of high quality care to all athletes, Dr. Benson also takes great pride in his ability to serve as a role model to young people.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hunter L. Durvin, MEd, LAT, ATC

Hunter is an area product from Henrico County, who returned to teach and serve as Henrico High School's athletic trainer in 1980, after receiving his BS in Health Education/Athletic Training from JMU and his MEd in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine from UVA. After teaching and working as an athletic trainer for nine years at Henrico HIGH SCHOOL, Hunter joined CJW Sports Medicine in July, 1989, and has served as its program coordinator ever since. From starting work with five area high schools, Hunter and Dr. Cutter have developed this program to what it is today. Hunter has most recently worked with Manchester High School, and has had connections working with countless middle and high schools in the Richmond/Tri-Cities area. In March, 2005, Hunter was named manager of outpatient rehab services for CJW, which includes the sports medicine program.

Steve Butler, PT

Steve, who is the lead senior physical therapist for CJW Sports Medicine/Hioaks Physical Therapy, received his physical therapy degree from Old Dominion University in 1990.

Since 1992 he has specialized in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation and has treated a variety of high school, collegiate and recreational athletes. He joined the sports medicine program in 1996 and has developed a subspecialty in treating foot and ankle disorders.

He also has an interest in the biomechanics of sport and performs video analysis of runners and walkers. With the analysis, he can advise effectively on proper running mechanics for injury prevention.

 

 

 

Edward L. Metzger, MS, LAT, ATC

Ed is affectionately known as CJW Sports Medicine's "wrestling nut"! After teaching and working for a number of years, Ed decided to go back to school at the age of 38, and finished his master's degree in athletic training at the University of Florida in 1993. When Dr. Cutter and Hunter Durvin were looking to hire a new athletic trainer, Ed was a natural fit because of his expertise in wrestling.

Ed had been a wrestler in high school and at Springfield College where he excelled, winning the New England Championship in the 134-pound weight class in 1973. He even competed with the likes of Dan Gable in the 1972 Olympic Trials in wrestling.

He has coached and officiated wrestling and ever since we hired Ed in 1993 he has covered the sports medicine needs of thousands of wrestlers, locally, state-wide and nationally. He has done it all when it comes to wrestling, hence his nickname, "the wrestling nut"! Ed does work with other sports, but wrestling IS his passion. Ed currently works with Clover Hill High School, where he is also the J.V. wrestling coach.

Michele Tyler, PT, ATC

Michele received her physical therapy degree from the University of New England in 1989, and has been practicing in the Richmond area in various sports medicine venues since then.

Michele was certified as an athletic trainer in 1992. She has had diverse sports medicine experiences including working with several high schools as an athletic trainer and performing rehabilitation services for the University of Richmond.

Michele joined the staff at CJW Sports Medicine in 1997 and currently serves as center coordinator for clinical education, assists with outreach projects, and continues her relationship with the University of Richmond sports medicine department.

 

 

 

Mary Alice Whitlock, PT

Mary Alice received her physical therapy degree from the University of Vermont in 1986, and has worked at CJW since then. Mary Alice has been at CJW Sports Medicine since 1993.

Her areas of specialty include functional capacity evaluations, work hardening, and orthotics.

 

 

 

Laura Goloski Sirine, MEd, LAT, ATC

Laura came to CJW Sports Medicine in July, 2004, after being the head athletic trainer at Mary Baldwin College. Laura holds a BS degree from Hollins University (1998) and a MEd in Athletic Training from Plymouth State University (2003). While at Plymouth State she was the graduate assistant ATC at Holderness School in Holderness, NH. That was where Laura developed her love of working with younger athletes. Before attending graduate school, Laura was an assistant athletic training intern at Washington & Lee University.

Laura developed her passion for athletic training while she attended Hollins University, first as an athlete and then as an athletic training intern. Laura's interests lay in concussion research to improve the care and recovery of injured athletes.

In June, 2005, Laura presented her master's degree research entitled, "The Effects of Sleep Loss on Concussion Assessment Tools" at the 2005 NATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia in Indianapolis, IN. Laura works with Midlothian High School, where Dr. Cutter serves as the primary team physician.

 

 

 

Chris Mahan, MEd, LAT, ATC

Chris joined the CJW Sports Medicine team in June, 2005, after working as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Richmond for five years, covering baseball and soccer.

He received a bachelor's degree in athletic training from the University of Delaware, and then received his MEd in athletic training from UVa. While in graduate school, Chris served as a graduate assistant at VMI, working with men's soccer and baseball.

At U of R, he worked with the women's soccer team, which went to the NCAA championship round twice. He also worked with the U of R Baseball team, which competed three times in the NCAA's championship round, once making it to the Super Regionals in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Chris worked as the full-time ATC covering Manchester High School from fall 2005 to spring 2008. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in Physician Assistant studies at James Madison University.

 

 

 

Andrew McGlamery, LPTA, CSCS

Andrew received a bachelor's degree in biology from the College of William & Mary in 1991 and an associate's degree in physical therapy assisting from John Tyler Community College in 1995. In 1999 he became a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), and he works with numerous groups and individuals to develop and advise them on their strength and conditioning needs.

In 2005, Andrew worked extensively with the USA Men's Field Hockey Team to redevelop their strength and conditioning program. Andrew began his outpatient orthopedic and sports medicine experience in 1995 and has been working in the field of workers' compensation and work hardening since 1997.

Andrew is particularly interested sports enhancement programs and powerlifting.

 

 

 

Jen Walle, MSPT, CSCS

Jen Walle has been with CJW Sports Medicine since 2003. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia with a Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy in 2002; Her undergraduate degree is a BS in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise which she recieved in 1999 from Virginia Tech.

She has an extensive background in gymnastics, as well as some dance which has significantly elevated her interest in sports, orthopedics, and manual therapy treatments. Jen is currently starting her second year treating students and athletes at the University of Richmond as part of our Sports Medicine program expansion. Most recently she recieved her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification. Jen is also responsible for coordinating our PT student clinical internships (CCCE-Center Coordinator for Clinical Education) as well as being our lead individual for arranging local professional continuing education events for PT.

 

 

 

Cameron Mauzy, DPT

Cam joined CJW Sports Medicine in January 2005, after completing her doctorate in physical therapy from MVC/VCU in December 2004. She received a bachelor's degree in human nutrition, foods and exercise from Virginia Tech in 2001.

She is pursuing continuing education in the recent advances in shoulder and knee treatments, McKenzie back evaluation and sacroiliac dysfunction.

 

 

 

John Dodd, MSPT, ATC

Before coming to CJW, John was an Athletic Trainer at Meadowbrook High School for 2 years and an assistant football coach at Matoaca High School for 4 years.

John received his bachelors from the College of William and Mary in 1996.  He went on to earn his master's in the Science of Physical Therapy from VCU/MCV School of Physical Therapy.  In 2000 John became a certified Athletic Trainer. 

John's interests lie in sports medicine and general orthopedic rehabilitation.

 

 

 

Kent G. Horner, Jr. LPTA

Kent joined CJW Sports Medicine in 1993.  He received his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from Radford University in 1991 and then his LPTA graduate degree in 1996.

Kent has lived in Chester, Va. his whole life and enjoys soccer, hunting and golf.

 

 

 

Heather Clark, LPTA

Heather received a bachelor's degree in human nutrition, foods, and exercise from Virginia Tech in 2001. She then obtained a physical therapy assistance degree at Tidewater Community College in May 2005. After graduation, Heather worked for 1 year in a general orthopedic physical therapy practice in Virginia Beach. In June 2006 she moved to Richmond to become a part of CJW Sports Medicine.

Since high school her interests have been in the sport of golf. As of July 2007, Heather became certified as a master specialist in golf performance. With the knowledge of the biomechanics of the human body and that of the golf swing, she can perform a full body analysis throughout the different phases of the swing. Once deficits are noted, Heather can establish an individualized exercise program geared towards training specific muscles in a correct manner.

 

 

 

Tracy Beverley, MS, LAT, ATC

Tracy joined the CJW Sports Medicine team in July 2006 after working as an Athletic Trainer for VCU, covering women’s volleyball and track and field.

Tracy received her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 2002 and her master’s degree from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2005.  While there she did an internship with Wake Forest covering football.

Tracy was the Athletic Trainer for L.C. Bird High School from August 2006 - December 2007. She is currently attending PA school at EVMS.

 

 

 

Raquel Martin, MS, LAT, ATC

Raquel joined the CJW Sports Medicine team in July 2006 after graduate school at VCU.

Raquel received her bachelor’s degree from VCU in 2004 and continued her graduate studies at VCU.  During that time she served as the Athletic Trainer for John Marshall High School.

Raquel is currently the Athletic Trainer for Meadowbrook High School.

 

 

 

David Koon, MS, CSCS

Coach Dave Koon is beginning his first year as the Director of Athletic Development for CJW Sports Medicine. Dave has developed athletes at all levels including: the Professional and Collegiate levels.

Dave has served as the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Basketball at The University of Richmond, and at Indiana State University. He worked as an intern at the University of Virginia with Football. Dave just finished serving as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist that worked with the U.S. Special Operations Military Communities including the Navy Seals in Norfolk, Virginia. 

Dave is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and has earned the Club Coach certification through the United States Olympic Lifting Federation. Dave also received his Masters in Physical Education from Indiana State University.

He is married to the former Sarah Daffron and has two children, Hannah and Jacob.

 

 

 

Dave Jaconski, MEd, LAT, ATC

Dave joined the CJW Sport Medicine team in June 2006 after serving as the Director of Sports Medicine and the Head Athletic Trainer at the University of Richmond from 2001-2006.

Dave received his undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine from Mercyhurst College, Erie PA, in 1989 and received his Masters degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in 1990. 

Dave worked with James River High School through March 2008 as the full-time athletic trainer.  He left to pursue other endeavors in the Richmond area, but remains a part of the CJW Sports Medicine Team as a part-time athletic trainer.

 

 

 

Adam Linens, LAT, ATC, CSCS

Adam has begun his first year with CJW Sports Medicine after working for the Covenant School in Charlottesville, VA.

Adam graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2005 with a degree in Athletic Training.

Adam is currently the athletic trainer at Thomas Dale High School and is helping out as the assistant JV basketball coach.

 

 

 

Danielle Ross, MS, LAT, ATC

Danielle joined the CJW Sports Medicine team in July 2006 after working as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Richmond for two years with men's soccer and women's swimming. Prior working at the University of Richmond, Danielle spent a year at Mary Washington College as assistant athletic trainer.

She attended Duquesne University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. While attending Duquesne University, Danielle played Division I lacrosse earning a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team for the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1999 and 2001. She continued her education at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill receiving her Master of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science. While at UNC, Danielle worked with football, women's rowing, and men's and women's tennis. At the 2004 NATA Annual Meeting and Clinical Symposia in Baltimore, MD, Danielle presented her master's thesis entitled Analysis of Amplitude, Onset Time, and Co-Activation Ratio of the Hamstring and Quadriceps During a Side-Step Pivot in Agility Trained Basketball Players.

Danielle works with Clover Hill HS and with Dr. Dec at the Commonwealth Center location.

 

 

 

Carrie Cheeley, MS, LAT, ATC

Carrie Cheeley joined the CJW staff in July of 2006, and currently works at Dr. Katherine Dec’s office.

Carrie received her BS in Exercise, Sport and Health Education from Radford University in May of 2004. She worked two years at Armstrong High School in Richmond, VA while she worked on her Master’s Degree in Health and Movement Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. She currently is working at Matoaca High School. Carrie is also a majorette coach for the Royalette Baton Corps, where she has been a member since since 1992.

 

 

 

Diane Dunn, DPT

Diane, originally from Virginia Breach Virginia, recently relocated the the Richmond area. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Old Dominion University in May 2007. She also received a Bachelors Degree in Exercises Science, with a minor in Marketing in 2004. 

Stemming from her experiences as a member of the Old Dominion Woman’s Soccer team she has a clinical interest in the biomechanics of the lower extremity, specifically the foot and ankle complex. Diane’s outside interest include outdoor activities, running, and soccer.

 

 

 

Steven Rice, P.T.

Steve comes to CJW as a very seasoned therapist, arriving in Richmond in June 2006. He received his B.S. in P.T. from the University of Connecticut in 1982. He has worked in a variety of settings including hospital, outpatient orthopedics, industrial medicine, and sports medicine. He is also a former USAF Physical Therapist serving in that capacity for 5 years. Steve has gained experience in work and life from several areas of the country including, New England, the Louisiana, Alaska, Nevada and most recently Arizona. He is a very energetic individual whose interests include: sports of all types and he has been an amateur bodybuilder with several competitions to his credit.

Steve is serving as a senior therapist and Assistant Manager of Outpatient Rehab Services.

 

 

 

Kristin Sampson, MSEd, LAT, ATC, CSCS

Kristin graduated with a BS in Athletic Training from Concord University in 2005.  She went on to receive a master's degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training from Old Dominion University in 2007.  While there, she served as a graduate assistant at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, VA.  Kristin is also certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Kristin became part of the CJW Sports Medicine Team in July 2007.  She is working as the Athletic Trainer at Monacan High School.

 

 

 

Ivan Schwartz

Ivan has spent his entire professional career involved with athletes.  After 15 years as the Sports Director at WTVR-TV (CBS) in Richmond, Ivan founded Capital Sports Management, a firm designed to handle the representation needs of professional baseball players.  In March of 2006, Ivan joined the CJW Sports Medicine family to oversee the growth and expansion of the program.

A graduate of Syracuse University and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication, he and his wife Stacey along with their 3 children reside in Midlothian.  Away from the office, Ivan is active as a coach of youth baseball and basketball, enjoys fishing and collecting sports memorabilia.

 

 

 

Carl L. Thomas, PT

Carl is the Director of Rehab Services for CJW Rehab Services, responsible for all rehab services both inpatient and outpatient for CJW. He joined the CJW team in April of 2004. He received his physical therapy degree from the University of Loma Linda in California, in 1976.

He has worked in Wisconsin, Michigan, Maine, Indiana and now Virginia. He has served as a Rehab Director since 1983. He has taught Work Hardening /Work Conditioning as an adjunct professor for Andrews University School of Physical Therapy for three years.
Carl’s interest lies in administration and overall physical therapy.

 

 

 

Lisa Donegan Shoaf, PT, PhD

Lisa Donegan Shoaf has been a physical therapist for 26 years completing her BS in Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia/VCU in 1981. She completed her MS in Exercise and Sport with a concentration in Adult Fitness and Dance from James Madison University in 1990, and her PhD in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002. Her practice areas are sports medicine and spine dysfunction with a strong use of manual therapy. She is also a polestar certified Pilates practitioner and incorporates the use of the Pilates principles and equipment in her treatments if appropriate.

Lisa is employed part time by CJW Sports Medicine but is also an assistant professor at the physical therapy program at Virginia Commonwealth University. She teaches in the entry level DPT program and serves as the coordinator of clinical education for that program. Lisa is a former dancer and teaches part time in the Dance Program at VCU, works with their dancers, and with the Richmond Ballet and other local professional companies and dance studios. She provides screenings, treatment for injuries, educational presentations, and Pilates training for dancers of all ages and dance styles.

 

 

 

Radhika Ippatoori, BPT, MSPT (ortho)

Radhika received her Bachelors degree in physiotherapy from Karnataka university, India in 2000. Upon graduation and working for an year in India she moved to United states for Post professional masters degree in Orthopedic physical therapy and graduated from Quinnipiac University, CT. After working in CT, NY city she moved to Richmond and worked for MCV before joining CJW Sports Medicine.

Radhika's areas of Special Interest and training includes, Mckenzie, Mulligan and Miatlands techniques, Cyriax evaluations and treatments, Kaltenborn Extremity mobilizations, Trigger point therapy and Post- Surgical Physical Therapy.

Radhika has achieved advanced levels of manual therapy techniques, through both post professional masters course work and work experience. Radhika has over 3 years of post graduate experience with a wide variety of Orthopedic treatment on adolescent, adult and geriatric patients with a strong emphasis on Manual therapy. Apart from being a physical therapist Radhika practices and performs Indian classical solo dance form- Kuchipudi.

 

 

 

 

Tessa DeJesus, LAT, ATC

Tessa graduated from James Madison University in May of 2007 with a BS in Athletic Training.

Tessa joined the CJW Sports Medicine Team in December of 2007. She is currently the Athletic Trainer for L.C.Bird High School.

 

 

 

 

Shelley W. Linens, MEd, LAT, ATC

Shelley has begun to work part-time with CJW Sports Medicine while working towards her PhD in Rehabilitation Movement Science at VCU.

Shelley graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training. She went on to graduate from the University of Virginia in August 2006 with a Master’s degree in Sports Medicine.

Shelley has worked with Chesterfield Community High School’s Men’s and Women’s basketball teams as well as with James River High School’s Men’s and Women’s lacrosse teams.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Casey Guadagnini, LAT, ATC

Casey returned to Richmond from Annapolis, Maryland in April 2008 to join the Sports Medicine team.

Casey received her undergraduate degree from VCU in May 2007 in Athletic Training and a minor in dance and choreography. She then continued as an intern at the United States Naval Academy until April 2008.

Casey is currently the athletic trainer for James River High School.

 

 

 

 

 

Amanda Thomas, LAT, ATC

Amanda graduated from Longwood University in May of 2008 with a BS in Kinesiology, concentration in Athletic Training.

Amanda joined the CJW Sports Medicine Team in July of 2008. She is the Athletic Trainer for Manchester High School.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Holly Griffith, LAT, ATC

Holly graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2007, and received her BS in Athletic Training.

She has been a member of the CJW Sports Medicine Team since September of 2007, and will temporarily serve as the Athletic Trainer for Midlothian High School.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kelly Liermann, MSeD, LAT, ATC, PES

Kelly joined the CJW Sports Medicine Team as a part-time ATC during the summer of 2007. In addition to being a part-time ATC with us, Kelly is teaching 4th grade in Henrico County.

Prior to teaching Kelly worked as an assistant athletic trainer for football at the University of Richmond for three years. She received her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. She also received a graduate degree from Duquesne in Education. During her time at Duquesne Kelly did a one year internship working in sports medicine/athletic training with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kelly spent the fall of 2007 covering Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot varsity football, as well as assisting in local event coverage. Kelly also works with Coach Koon and the Athletic Development program in the summers.
