Stroke Treatment at CJW

Stroke, cerebrovascular disease, is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the US. The term "brain attack" is used synonymously with stroke to emphasize the importance of seeking emergency treatment at the onset of symptoms. Every minute lost closes the window of opportunity for treatment aimed at preventing permanent damage.

Stroke Guide: Hope Through ResearchStroke Guide: Hope Through Research
Each year in the United States, there are more than 700,000 strokes and is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. Learning about strokes could help save a co-worker, friend, or relative's life.

CJW has received Primary Stroke Center Certification from JCAHO, and it has put in place measures that expedite the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. For example, a special “Code Neuro” goes into effect whenever a patient arrives at one of CJW’s emergency rooms with acute stroke symptoms, making sure they get the fastest treatment possible at a time when every minute counts.

We treat some 500 stroke patients each year. It wasn't long ago when stroke victims were treated with a "wait-and-see" approach. Now that's changed, thanks to new drugs and better diagnostic tools.

In fact, today it's possible to take aggressive action that can sometimes minimize or even prevent long-term damage from a stroke. Our physicians often use new clot-busting drugs that work dramatically if given within the first three hours of the onset of stroke symptoms.
